Latavion Johnson Tuskegee Shooting Death, Jaquez Myrick arrested in mass shooting at Tuskegee University

After a shooting broke out on Tuskegee University’s campus on Sunday, leaving one person dead and sixteen injured, investigators stated they had captured a suspect. Later Sunday, Jaquez Myrick, 25, of Montgomery, was taken into custody by authorities on a federal charge of machine gun possession.

According to an Alabama Law Enforcement Agency spokeswoman, Myrick was discovered in possession of a handgun equipped with a machine gun conversion device after being observed departing the site of the shooting. The person killed was not connected to the private, historically Black university, according to school spokesperson Kawana McGough, who also confirmed the rampage.

According to McGough, Tuskegee students were among the injured and receiving care at Baptist South Hospital in Montgomery and East Alabama Medical Centre in Opelika. About 40 miles to the east of Montgomery is Tuskegee. The only person killed was an 18-year-old, according to the Alabama Bureau of Investigations, which was in charge of the investigation.

According to the statement, four other persons were hurt “not related to gunfire,” and twelve more were shot and injured. According to Alabama Law Enforcement Agency spokesman Sgt. Jeremy Burkett, special agents were alerted of the shootings on the Tuskegee campus at approximately 1:40 a.m.

Officers responding to the shooting initially thought there were multiple shooters, according to police radio reports. The institution announced that students will have access to grief counsellors and cancelled Monday’s classes. McGough said the institution was informing parents of the injured and checking on the health of students as it celebrated its 100th homecoming weekend.
